Open Source Ethos
“Everything has either a price or a dignity. What has a price can be replaced by something else as its equivalent; what on the other hand is above all price and therefore admits of no equivalent has a dignity.”
— Immanuel Kant
“Open source communities encourage innovation through collaboration. Without it, many of the technologies we take for granted today would never have developed, or would be locked away behind patent law. In deploying Rocky Linux, we are returning to true open-source principles.”
— Tareq Amin, CEO of Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony
CIQ’s day-to-day work and culture are informed by the core values of the open source community. Ultimately, as the Kant quote above indicates, the choices one faces in business and life come down to the most basic question: “What do you value?”
Yes, we’re a for-profit company. Proudly so. But, for us… open source will never be a business. The ethos of open source, though, shapes our every customer engagement, our approach to collaboration, our product development, and how we interact with colleagues.
Deeds, not words, are what matter here. For example, CIQ has underwritten the development of FIPS 140-3 to improve the security of Rocky Linux. These improvements will benefit everyone in the community. That’s the way it should be.
Because of our commitment to open source and our ongoing work with the open source community, these are open source values that inspire us:
