Rocky Linux Community

Enterprise Linux, Built by Community.

We 💚 Rocky Linux!

Rocky Linux was created on December 8, 2020, after Red Hat announced that it would discontinue the development and support of CentOS in its current form. On that same day, the original founder of CentOS, Gregory Kurtzer, made his own announcement, stating his intention to create a RHEL-compatible Linux distribution that would fulfill the original goals of CentOS. As a tribute to early CentOS co-founder, Rocky McGaugh, the new project was named Rocky Linux.

With regular updates and a 10-year committed support lifecycle for each major release, Rocky Linux is ideal for use in enterprise environments. It is easy to migrate from CentOS and other RHEL-derived Linux distributions, and it is secure and scalable. And people have started to notice: Rocky Linux is now the fastest-growing enterprise Linux in the world.

The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation

The Rocky Linux open source software project is maintained by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF), backed by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, CIQ, and others. CIQ is the official support and services Partner and Founding Sponsor of the Rocky Linux project.

The RESF Community Charter is expressly designed to promote transparency, fairness, and long-term stability by ensuring that the Rocky Linux codebase is protected from ever becoming co-opted.
